| Snowstorm |
Tuesday, September 20th, the Snowstorm cluster was upgraded from 1 Teraflop to 2 Teraflops by doubling the number of nodes from 49 to 99 nodes. The new Snowstorm-nodes are the same as the old ones, HP Itanium2-nodes delivered by IT-partner Tromsø and HP Norway. With the use of the award winning Rocks management toolkit, the existing 204 processors cluster was upgraded to 396 processors without taking down the system. The Rocks cluster management tool allows you to add new HW to the cluster on the fly - without any downtime.

| Installing Infiniband |
At the same time, the HPC group at UiT installed the high speed interconnect Infiniband on all the 99 Snowstorm cluster nodes. 25 of the nodes also have the SCI based 2-D torus installed, delivered by the Norwegian company Dolphin Interconnect Solutions.
After the upgrade, the system load immediately increased, and one week later there was waiting time in the jobqueue once again.
