National Resource Site: Since 2000 UiTø has been a Resource Site in the national High Performance Computing Consortium (NOTUR), a joint mission between the four Norwegian Universities, Ceetron, DNMI, SINTEF and Statoil. On January 1st 2005 a new limited company within Uninett (Sigma) was established to administrate the national HPC program. The four Universities will act as Resource Sites as before. In November 2004 UiTø installed a locally funded Teraflop cluster consisting of 49 4-way Itanium2 nodes. The installation took less than 4 hours, and within 7 hours the system load was 73%. The installation process was covered live on the Internet. For more information follow the link below.
Services: The HPC-Group works within three areas:
- Technical and Operational computing resource support to the national program, and local initiatives.
- Basic and Advanced user support to projects and research groups that utilizes HPC or is expecting to do so in the future.
- Involvement in national development projects and initiatives, for instance in GRID Computing and new technology areas.
Since 2003 the HPC-Group at the University of Tromsø has been one of five international groups working on the cluster management toolkit Rocks. In 2004 Rocks won several awards in HPC Wire, including the prize for "Most Important Software Innovation 2004". Since then Rocks has also become the de-facto standard for cluster-management in Norwegian High Performance Computing.
