Structural chemistry at the molecular level
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents This course will cover an introduction to the most important methods for structure determination of molecular compounds: X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, electron diffraction, rotation spectroscopy and NMR. A general survey will be given of bond distances, bond angles, molecular packing in crystals, conformation, the configuration of chiral molecules and intermolecular interactions. An introduction to models for calculations of molecular structure will be given. Emphasis will be placed on relationship between structure and reactivity. The structure of molecules important in biology and the relationship between structure and biological behaviour will be described. | Form of teaching Lectures/seminars: 48 hours (12 weeks, 4 hours pr week)
| Compulsory teaching Exercises | Assessment A written mid-term exam and a final written exam. In addition, there will be a compulsory exercise (a computer based visualizing and/or calculation) during the course. Lettergrades (A-F). | Examination semester Autumn | Date(s) of written examination 19.12.2005 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester. | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally third year. | Contact person/lecturer Department of Chemistry, tel: 77 64 40 80, e-mail: postmottak@chem.uit.no | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian | Course overlap K-241 -1 10 sp | Homepage http://uit.no/kjemi/emner/114
