Experimental design and optimisation in organic synthesis
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents The course treats methods and experimental strategies for solving problems encountered when a chemical reaction is to be transformed into a synthetic method. This includes methods both for the analysis and the optimisation of experimental conditions as well as methods for the systematic study of entire reaction systems. The methodology treated in the course is based on multivariate statistical methods. No previous background in statistics is required. The following topics will be presented in the course: Methods for screening experiments (factorial design, fractional factorial design, D-optimal design, Plackett-Burman design); methods for the optimisation of experimental conditions (steepest ascent, simplex methods, response surface methodology); methods for the systematic analysis of entire reaction systems. The concept principal properties is introduced and it is shown how to construct experimental designs for analysing discrete variation of reaction systems and how data obtained is such experiments can be evaluated by, for example, principal component analysis and PLS-modelling. The course includes both theory and practical exercises. During the practical exercises, the student will, for example, solve real-life problems by computer-assisted modelling and simulations. The course is given as an intense course concentrated to two periods of each one week (20 h/week) | Form of teaching Lectures: 40 h Seminars/exercises: 20 h
| Assessment Oral examination Admission to examination requires that the student (a) has presented a written critical review of a given manuscript, and (b) has presented a written lay-out of an experimental study in his/hers own field of research.
