Introduction to research methodology in organic chemistry
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents This introduction course is compulsory for students starting a master program in organic chemistry. The course assumes prior knowledge in chemistry corresponding to the theoretical part of KJE-3301 (Organic chemistry 2). The student's supervisor will in the course function as a tutorial advisor. The course will be divided in three parts. For part 2 and 3 written reports have to be prepared for evaluation. Part 1: Practical use of computers. This part of the course is intended for students with little or no experience with computers. An introduction to common word processing programs, drawing programs and spread sheet programs useful for chemists will be given. Part 2: Literature research. An introduction to the library at UiTø will be given. The student will become familiar with standard databases for manual and for computer assisted literature research (s.a. Chemical Abstract, Beilstein). Each student will be assigned a literature project for which a written report has to be prepared. Part 3: Experimental techniques. The student will become familiar with: i) General laboratory techniques including procedures for synthesis under inert atmosphere in mg and gram scale. ii) Standard work-up techniques s.a. extraction, flash chromatography, distillation and crystallisation. iii) Basic procedures for analysis by GC, HPLC, IR and NMR. iv) How to write a laboratory journal. | Form of teaching Lectures: 15 h Tutorials: 40 h Laboratory exercises: 200 h | Assessment Reports | Examination semester Autumn | Type of course Theoretical and practical subject. | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master's level. | Contact person/lecturer Department of Chemistry, tel: 77 64 40 80, e-mail: postmottak@chem.uit.no | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian, english by request | Course overlap K-300 -1 10 sp | Homepage http://uit.no/kjemi/emner/184
