Proteins – folding and stability
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents The course will cover the thermodynamic and biophysical properties of the different folding states of proteins. Various theories and mechanisms for protein folding and denaturation will be discussed, along with models for the "denatured state" and intermediates in the folding process. The "Molten Globule State" will be discussed in particular. The course will also cover both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of folding/unfolding processes. Biophysical properties important for protein stability (hydrophobicity, electrostatics, amino acid composition, solvent properties, secondary structure elements) will be discussed. | Form of teaching Lectures/seminars: 30 h | Assessment Oral exam | Examination semester Spring | Level of course/Year of study First or second year at master's level. | Contact person/lecturer Sissel Hansen, tel: 77 64 40 80, e-mail: sissel.hansen@chem.uit.no | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Recommended previous qualifications KJE-3402 Protein Structure | Recommended reading/syllabus Available on request | Language of instruction Norwegian, english by request | Homepage http://uit.no/kjemi/emner/190
