KJE-3405
Crystallography II
Emnebeskrivelse
Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Contents This subject is a continuation of KJE-3403 but will cover the underlining theory of the science more extensively and at greater depth. This will include diffraction, symmetry in crystals, space groups, reciprocal space, the Ewald construction, resolution, scattering theory, structure factors and the measurement and reduction of diffraction data including synchrotron data. Fourier analysis and synthesis will be introduced, leading to the phase problem and how it is solved using direct methods, molecular replacement and heavy atom techniques including those using anomalous dispersion. This will lead to the calculation and modification of Electron density maps, model building and refinement and the validation and interpretation of the structure. The course will be aimed at students who do not necessarily have a strong background in physics or mathematics. | Form of teaching Lectures: 50 h Seminars/laboratory exercises: 40 h
