Objectives and content
Algebra is the study of certain mathematical objects and structures of an algebraic or discrete nature. Algebra is an important part of mathematics whose methods and results can be used in such scientific fields as computer science, physics, statistics and other branches of mathematics. Master's theses are offered in the fields of cryptography/coding theory, algebraic number theory, analysis of algorithms and homological algebra.
The table above is an example of a program in algebra. This example demands a bachelor's degree in mathematics with courses in abstract algebra (groups, rings etc.) and complex analysis. The specialization here is in algebraic number theory and elliptic curves.
See also the study option in computer security.
If you’re interested, get in touch with professor Ben Johnsen, professor Loren Olson, professor Andrei Prasolov or associate professor Ragnar Soleng.
Other relevant courses:
MAT-3303 Algebraic curves and courses in mathematics at the 2000- or 3000-level.
Special syllabus upon approval.
For further information on evaluation/examination/assesment, see individual course descriptions.
Student exchange
The Master's program is structured such that the student can spend shorter or longer periods studying abroad.
Qualification awarded
The master's degree program in mathematics qualifies for the Master of Science degree.
Access to further studies
The Master of Science degree is a prerequisite for admission to PhD-studies.
Professional prospects
Candidates with this education often work in companies developing cryptological hardware or software. Examples are major companies such as Telenor and Ericsson. Others are employed at universities and colleges, responsible for research, teaching or information security.
Program coordinator
The program coordinator for the master's degree program in mathematics is the head of the departmental administration Helge Johansen; helge@mat-stat.uit.no, tlf. 7764 5130.
