Objectives
This elective course is designed for master students across the academic disciplines, who are interested in questions related to study violence and conflict. It will conclude early in the semester to give the students the possibility to start their fieldwork (Master students also have the opportunity to follow this course in their forth semester). The lectures will be aimed at Master level students, but interested students at other levels are welcome to join.
Contents
This course addresses both theoretical and methodological issues in the anthropological study of violence in contexts of larger scale conflict. Firstly, it will provide an introduction to some of the most influential anthropological works on violence in the contexts of militant nationalism, ethnic conflicts, war and genocide. We will examine some of the earlier anthropological studies of violence and discuss these in relation to later developments within the field. An important part of these discussions will be to assess critically how different scholars choose to define and theorise violence and the ethical predicaments behind such definitions and theories. Secondly, the course will address some of the challenges the study of violence poses to the antrhropological method of participant observation. These challenges are often common to fieldwork in general, while others are more specific to situations of violent conflict. This part of the course will place particular emphasis on recent ethnical debates in relation to doing fieldwork in such contexts.

Form of teaching
The training is given as a course of approximately ten lectures in the first half of the semester.
