CIH and SIH – a big brother supports a newborn child!

Centre for International Health (CIH) at the University of Bergen is like a guiding star for the comparatively newly established Centre for International Health (SIH) in Tromsø. “As we know that CIH in Bergen has been rated top-level internationally for their work, we are really honoured for the invitation to collaborate with Bergen”, says director Solveig Wiesener at SIH.

Through their work, CIH has gained the attention of Norway’s Minister of International Development, Ms. Hilde Frafjord Johnson. “The University of Bergen has (in collaboration with the Haukeland University Hospital) succeeded in establishing a very strong and dynamic environment for international health research, the Centre for International Health at the Medical Faculty in Bergen”, she says in her speech at the conference on Global Health Research, in Bergen this year.

See the speech on the Norwegian Foreign Department's website.

“The University of Tromsø and the University of Bergen have strong traditions in close and positive collaboration. Therefore, it feels natural to continue this by strengthening both institutions within international health”, replies director at CIH Bjarne Bjorvatn in a meeting in Bergen.

Both in research, education and development programmes, the trend now is to establish large programmes with several collaboration partners from different countries. In Norway the international health milieus are relatively small. A closer collaboration between the Norwegian institutions will strengthen our possibilities to be partners in those big programmes. Tromsø and Bergen have specialities in which their competence is in front both nationally and internationally. “Our challenge is to make this competence visible and gain experience from each other, underline scientific adviser”, professor Tore Gutteberg at SIH.

The representatives from Bergen and Tromsø agreed on further collaboration among others in global health research, development of international students programmes and different health projects together with partners in countries in the South.

CIH and SIH will support and initiate collaboration in addition to individual initiatives taken by persons at both institutions.
