ODO-1001: Biomedical subject Work Load 40 credits (ECTS) | Objectives The courses in basic biomedicine will give students an understanding of the fundamental biology that is the basis of all life. The course covers a wide variety of subjects from the study of molecular processes on a cellular level to the regulation of biological processes in cell-biology and physiology. It includes subjects such as cell growth and division, energy regulation, absorption and secretions of chemical substances, information transferal, movement and differentiation. The course also explains the function of cells and tissue in healthy and sick individuals, and how these functions are regulated and coordinated. Students are made aware of the rapid development in molecular biology and how this might affect dentistry. The course will also provide and understanding of disciplines such as pharmacology, microbiology, pathology and immunology. | Contents The course covers Chemistry, Biology, Cell-biology (Cytology), Genetics, Histology, Embryology and Physiology. The course is taught to both medical and dentistry-students. | Form of teaching Task-oriented lectures, colloquium and seminars that provide an in depth look at central issues in the curriculum. There will also be mandatory laboratory and microscopy courses. | Compulsory teaching Laboratory and microscope course, Laboratory journals | Assessment Compulsory lab-work with handing in of reports in chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology and physiology. The reports must be approved before the student can pass Basic Biology. There will be one written 6-hour exam covering all aspects of the course in June. It will be marked pass or fail. | Examination semester Spring | Date(s) of written examination 09.06.2005 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change.
