PED-3001: Individual, culture and society from an educational

Work Load
20  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
The course is compulsory for students enlisted in the Master of ecucation program. By the end of the course students should have a good understanding of central lines of thought in educatinal science and adjacent disciplines, which directly and indirectly have influenced the field of education.
Contents
The main content of this course are the sciences and disciplines, which have contributed most to the development of modern educational science. Primarily this includes philosophy and the history of ideas, the philosophy of science, psychology, sociology and anthropology. Emphasis will be on how these fields of knowledge have contributed to the development of the sub-disciplines in educational science and to the discipline as a whole. The social and cultural context is also manifested at the level of the individual. Cultural psychology deals with some of these areas and explains how culture and the individual conflate, and the processes and mechanisms through which this occur. Freud''s and Jung''s theories on this, and some of the counter arguments against their theories will be discussed - a.o. on the basis of Wittgensteins''s philosiophy of language.
Form of teaching
Students may start the course in the autumn or in the spring. Course work is divided evenly between the two terms. There will be lectures and seminars.

2 essays (ca 10 pages each); 1 essay at the end of each term.

The 2 essays are home assignments on topics selected from a list provided by the teacher. The essays are graded on a scale from A to F, where F is fail.
