SPL-1001: Introduction to Regional Planning

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
There are two aims with this subject:1) to provide an introduction to the nature of interdisciplinary social science research 2) to provide an introduction to civic planning as an activity This subject is a compulsory part of Bachelor studies in civic planning and cultural understanding.
Contents
This subject demonstrates how it is possible to understand the interaction between planning, daily life and business life, in the development of regions, town communities and smaller-scale local communities. The main emphasis is placed on illustrating the relationship between formal decisions and informal processes.Civic planning is concerned with being able to lead a knowledge-based form of administration and influence, with a basis in a political agenda. Planning is further concerned with furthering processes, based on broad participation, in which an attempt is made to take account of the current situation as well as cultural inheritance and contemporary society. By means of this type of focus, we shall show how society can best be understood through knowledge that cuts across the traditional classifications in different fields or disciplines.Planning takes place not only in physical but also social and culturally constructed landscapes. In other words, planning has to relate to different local contexts that can only be grasped through an understanding of culture and identity. Planning cannot be carried out according to a standard model, applicable everywhere, but must be tailored to the concrete context to and for which the planning applies.Planning for a more differentiated society also involves planning for a multicultural society. The planner carries his/her innate culture and needs to be conscious of how this forms his/her own practices. Culture may also be important as the planning object within the cultural preservation or cultural sector generally. Civic planning is therefore concerned with the administration of culture in a broad sense. Urban culture, coastal culture and industrial culture stand in a relationship of mutual tension, at the same time as minorities and sub-cultures are also included in local contexts. Besides this, the subject will demonstrate civic planning possibilities in conjunction with the market orientation of business life. Here, emphasis is placed on illustrating the planning role in business structural changes and possibilities of balancing business, cultural and environmental aspects of the planning process.
