FIL-0700: Examen philosophicum

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
The Examen philosophicum is a compulsory part of the bachelor degree and is, with certain exceptions, compulsory for all those wishing to study for a degree at the University of Tromsø. This subject is normally studied during the first semester, together with the ex.fac and one of the academic subjects from the programme for which the student has registered.

Contents
The main areas of study are philosophical history, together with scientific history and ethics. Students will become familiar with a number of the most essential questions posed concerning human understanding and regarding moral and political practice, both as these have been raised in the course of the history of philosophy and as they are raised today. This course of study will provide an elementary introduction to scientific thinking. At the same time the course of study will offer certain choices that provide space for students'' own interests and concerns.

Form of teaching
Lectures and seminars.

Teaching consists of lectures (2 hours per week) and seminars (4 hours per week). A lecture series is offered that is common to all students. The aim of the lectures is to provide knowledge in the form of an overview. The seminars are geared towards different academic fields. Links to a particular group do not carry any obligation in terms of future studies. There is, for example, the opportunity to study natural science options even though the ex.phil taken may have been geared towards the humanities. It is specified as a work requirement that students should attend 75% of the seminars and have attended an individual assignment supervision. A seminar group should consist of no more than 25 students. The seminar will provide the opportunity for specialization in questions raised in the lectures, textbooks and a choice of original texts. The seminar teaching is a teacher-led form of instruction with a high level of student participation. The seminar series creates an environment for a dialogue between the teacher and students in which students receive ongoing feedback to their mastery of what they are being taught. In connection with the take-home assignment, students are offered group supervision, with the chance to go through texts relating to the specialist subject, as well as one individual supervisory session. In the process of writing, students will be offered help in, amongst other things, choosing literature and receive practical advice about writing, citation technique, acknowledgement of sources and creating a bibliography. The teaching extends throughout the entire semester. However, there will be breaks in the teaching for part of the project period and during the final evaluation period.

Compulsory teaching
Mandatory attandance in seminars, Tutoring
Assessment
In order to be allowed to sit the examination, work requirements must be approved, i.e. 75% attendance at the seminar teaching and one individual assignment supervision. The basis for evaluation is a take-home assignment and an oral examination, of which both parts must be approved in order for the final grade to be determined.

- Take-home assignment
Students must submit a take-home assignment, either individually or in a group of up to three people. Students may either choose the theme and issues raised in their assignment themselves, based on the syllabus for the course, or may select their assignment project from a given list of assignments. The syllabus consists of a compulsory section and a given number of specialization subjects from which students must choose. Students must choose one specialization subject. The assignment project should be decided upon in consultation with a supervisor, who will approve the project at least 14 days before the deadline for submission. Students are offered group supervision in the chosen specialization subject and one individual supervision. An individual assignment should be approx. 5 normal pages in length. In the case of group work involving two students, the assignment should be 8-10 pages in length, in the case of three students 12-15 pages in length.

- Oral section
The oral evaluation process consists primarily of an examination of the syllabus, but there is also the opportunity to ask the candidate about his/her take-home assignment. Candidates who have submitted group assignments may choose between a group or an individual oral examination. In the case of a group examination, the oral presentations will be evaluated independently.

The work will be evaluated on a scale of A-E (pass) and F (fail). In the case of grade F, approved work requirements may be carried over to the next examination. If the written section is not approved, the candidate will not be offered the chance to proceed to the oral section. In the event of the written section being approved, this may be included in the portfolio if the candidate is re-examined the following semester. For further details, please refer to "Forskrift for eksamener ved Universitetet i Tromsø".
