The cource gives an introduction to the roots and history of Judaism, with emphasis on sources such as the Bible, rabbinical writings, and Jewish philosophy and theology from the Middle Ages and modern times. In addition, the course examines central issues such as the Creation, the relationship between God and Israel (e.g. the law, election of the chosen people) and the Messiah. Other issues to be discussed include modern forms of Judaism, such as reformed, orthodox and conservative practices, as well as themes such as ethics, women and Zionism.

In addition, the course offers and introductin to the sources of Islam and the religions origins and growth, including theological and philosophical debates that have had a formative influence on the development of Islam.
