Innhold
Historians have disagreed widely as to the effects the plague epidemic of 1347-50 had on the medieval economy and society; they have also disagreed to what extent the Black Death ushered in a period of extended social, economic and political crisis. The course will examine aspects of the period between 1300 and 1500, to consider those debates - including the debate around the origins of the transition from feudalism to capitalism, and how that series of changes began in this period. Also considered are the implications for Scandinavia - in particular the traditional attribution of the decline of the medieval Norwegian state to the Black Death and its consequences.
