HIS-1005: North Norway between Tradition and Modernization 1870-2000 Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical subject. | Level of course/Year of study Normally first or second year. | Language of instruction Norwegian | Examination semester Autumn
| Objectives This is an optional course in bachelor studies in History. It is included as an optional subject in the History for Teachers course of study (60 credits). It serves as a subsidiary subject in social science disciplines such as Political Science, Sociology and Social Planning.
| Contents This subject covers the rise of modern North Norway. On the one hand it is concerned with how this area of the country was transformed, with the process of modernization that integrated the region in larger national and global contexts from an economic, political and cultural point of view. But it is also concerned with the obstinate opposition to the reforming powers, with defending tradition. This suspense between the traditional and the modernization that would succeed it is an ongoing theme here. The region also became more integrated through the process of modernization and different political arenas, and a North Norwegian regional identity came into being. This was another contributory factor in the varied route towards North Norway as a region.
| Form of teaching This subject is taught using a variety of teaching methods.
| Exam and assessment 2 essays (each 5 pages). Evaluated on a scale of A-E (pass) and F (fail). The course is open for re-sit examination early in the following semester. | Contact person/lecturer Steinar Aas | Recommended reading/syllabus See homepage. | Course overlap HIS-1111 -1 2 sp | Homepage http://uit.no/historie/1982/6
