BIO-2303: Genetics Work Load 10 credits (ECTS) | Type of course Theoretical and practical. | Level of course/Year of study Normally second or third year. | Language of instruction Norwegian or English | Examination semester Autumn
| Objectives To provide basic insight into genetic principles and into the mechanisms of general aspects of heredity, genetic mapping, gene regulation, gene technology, genomics and genetic variation. | Contents The purpose of genetics is to study the contents of inherited information as well as how it is organised, transmitted, regulated and changed at every level, i.e. at the molecular or cell level or at the level of the organism or population. This course aims to give the students in-depth insight into several aspects of classical and molecular genetics. The following topics will be highlighted: general aspects of heredity, genetic mapping, regulation of gene expression, gene-technological principles and application, genomics, and genetic variation. The Lab course will provide an introduction to mapping and characterisation of genes in a eukaryotic organism (yeast) by 1) classical genetic analysis and 2) molecular genetic techniques. | Recommended previous qualifications BIO-1001 Cell and molecular biology | Form of teaching Lectures, student colloquia/seminars and lab work. The lab exercises are compulsory and the lab reports need to be approved prior to final exam. | Coursework requirements
