Objectives
The objective of the subject is to provide the students with an overview of various forms of telemedicine, including technologies, applications and dispersion. For this reason the role of telemedicine systems in advanced professional health settings will be highlighted. Visions and expectations of the discipline will be explored. Telemedicine as a discipline is placed in the context of other areas such as telehealth, e-health and medical informatics. Various forms of techniques for evaluating telemedicine systems will be discussed and analysed.
Contents
The course is intended to provide insight into the many expectations and visions associated with telemedicine. To a growing extent, telemedicine has been proposed as an alternative to more conventional forms of health services. It is assumed that telemedicine contributes to a fairer health service across geographical and social boundaries, as well as helping to reduce (or at least limit) the growing costs of the health service.

National and international experience with telemedicine will be placed in a historical context. The current status will be reviewed with a focus on different telemedicine applications in relation to methodology, technology and medical/professional health quality. The course also concerns the spread of telemedicine and experience with some classic telemedicine applications in hospitals, for example in pathology, radiology, dermatology and ear, nose and throat conditions. Telemedicine projects in progress are also presented by staff from the NST. The focus in these projects is evaluated against the scientific literature in the course.

To understand telemedicine''s complexity, its applications and benefits are described from different perspectives: the patient''s, the general practitioner''s, and the hospital''s. This is also placed in a political and legislative context. From the patient''s perspective, telemedicine is considered through factors such as access to and quality of different forms of Internet-based health information. For the doctors, it is important that telemedicine is perceived as a useful clinical tool.

The subject area of telemedicine is positioned in relation to other subjects and concepts, such as telehealth, e-health and medical informatics. The aim of this is to encourage students to reflect on what the essence of telemedicine is, compared with more conventional subject areas.

The course will also focus on how telemedicine succeeds in some areas, while in other areas its success is more modest because of costs, image quality and inadequate integration. The course therefore includes problem formulations of various evaluation methodologies in telemedicine.
