This is a free choice subject in the bachelor degree study course in History. Contents
The Russian Revolution is one of the great milestones in twentieth century history. It formed the basis of the Soviet societal system and had far-reaching political cumulative effects in the Western world, and to some degree also in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The break-up of the Soviet system in the 1990s means that the Soviet epoque in Russian history may be studied as a completed whole, and this has to some extent altered the view of the revolution. In the study of the Russian Revolution it is possible to talk of two main trends: the liberal/conservative (which is mostly concerned with ideology and manoeuvring at the highest political level) and the "revisionistic" or social historical, which focuses on class relations and structures of society. In recent years the new history ("the linguistic turn") has also begun to gain ground in studies of the revolution. All three of these trends are represented in the syllabus for this subject, which covers the period 1890-1920 chronologically. However, the main emphasis is placed on the revolutionary year of 1917. Literature in the syllabus list and seminar plan marked * is contained within the syllabus publication. Literature marked # indicates recommended titles (not included in the syllabus).
