Biology
Contents:
There is a unified bachelors degree in biology for the whole university regardless of the student’s line of study. During the course of the third semester the student must choose which of the disciplines within the science of biology he/she intends to pursue and thereby which faculty they will study at (NFH, MF or MNF. Respectively; The Norwegian College of Fisheries, The Faculty of Medicine or The Faculty of Science).
All the biology programmes start with a foundation course (60 course credits) that all students of biology must take. This foundation course consists of Cell biology and molecular biology (20 course credits), Zoology (10 c.c.), Botany (10 c.c.), Ecology and evolution (10 c.c.) and Physiology (10 c.c.). The foundation course provides a broad introduction in fundamental biology and related sciences, thereby giving the student a good foundation for further choices and specialisation within biology.
Objectives:
The bachelor programme in biology provides for significant freedom of choice.
Other than the first three semesters (common foundation) and certain other requirements of up to 30 course credits (dependent on the masters programmes), the bachelor programme permits considerable freedom to choose courses according to the student’s own academic and career interests. Whilst the bachelors degree is an autonomous grade, it can also serve as the foundation for a masters degree. In the event that the student wishes to pursue this option, the choice of courses at bachelor level must take this into account and include those courses that are an obligatory precondition for the individual masters programme the student wishes to follow.
Admission Requirements:
The bachelors programme in biology assumes that the student has already obtained qualifications in biology at a level equivalent to the last two years of High School. Those who are not already qualified to this level should take the introductory course (BIO-Intro) instead of Ex. Phil in the first semester. Students following this option will then take Ex. Phil. either semester 4 (2nd spring semester) or semester 5 (3rd autumn semester).

Qualification awarded/Access to further studies:
When completing the programme, the qualification awarded is a Bachelor of Science degree. This qualifies the candidates for admission to the 2-year Master’s degree programme in Biology.
Student exchange:
The programme in Biology are structured such that the student can spend one semester studying abroad -the 6th semester.
Professional prospects:
The Bachelor’s programme is first and foremost intended to qualify the student for access to further studies in biology. However, with a bachelor’s degree in biology there are opportunities for positions within the industry and public administration. Combined with a practical education in pedagogy a bachelor’s degree qualifies the candidate for employment as a teacher.
