Orientering fra
ISU Student Board Spring 2005 Monthly report

May 2005

Our Constitution
The highlight of this month was the adoption of a new constitution for ISU. We called a special General Assembly to do this. Prior to the Assembly a committee of 5, 3 board members and 2 ordinary members spent about 20 hours discussing and transcribing the comments. The deadline for the revision was met and revised versions sent out to members for comment.

Flowing out of this new constitution was the election of an auditing committee. The elected was Artur as chairperson and Bineet as deputy. Please check our website for full details about the new constitution.

Utropia
We took front page with our concerns regarding the new policy about the Quota Scholarships only being for those students from universities who have agreements with UiTø. We were concerned that this would seriously affect the Master degree Programmes of Peace Studies and Indigenous Studies as most of these students do not have access due to conflict or marginalisation.

Semester End Celebration
On 28 May we hosted a seminar by Dr Maloka who is the Director of the Africa Institute of SA. The seminar, “Development of Africa, its enhancement in global standing” was held in the centre for Peace Studies. We’d like to thank them for availing a venue. The seminar was well attended with about 40 participants ranging from under-graduate to post-graduate to lecturers and Trine and Magne from the 46664 Arctic Days. We also thank all those who attended for their support and interest. With a special thanks from the SA Embassy in Oslo for sending Dr Maloka to Tromsø.

Our Semester end party’s theme was ‘Demystify Africa’. The board agreed to have this theme because it was inline with the Nelson Mandela concert and the Africa Day on the 25 May 2005. 46664 arctic days gave us 2 46664Arctic Concert tickets as prizes and Driv included 2 as well. So thanks to these guys we had an exciting party.

Emperial Ghetto Photo Exhibition
ISU and the University Library have worked closely together in putting this photo exhibition up. It will give the viewer a brief glance into the kind of racial spaces that existed during the volatile period of the 1980’s in South Africa. This was the kind of world Nelson Mandela and others have changed. Today we still have problems but it is a constructive part to rebuilding our identities. The exhibition is on display from 1 to 12 June in the foyer of the main library.

Arctic Days Event
A sub committee was formed to deal with our participation in Arctic Days. On 7 June we will be part of a discussion panel at Driv as part of the students’ events. Dragica and Jemima work closely with Åsne and other student organisations on campus to make this event successful.

Finance
Our balance in the bank is about 23 000kr for the next committee.

Conclusion
Gabriela is working on the introductory week for new international students together with the International Student Counselling Centre and the Office of International Affairs. She will be responsible for the introductory week as I only return on the 10 September 2005 from my field work.

The next General Assembly is planned for the end of August 2005. Some board members have indicated their willingness to serve on the board for another term.

Please allow me to thank you all for your patience and support during these last 2 semesters. It was interesting working with all of you on student activities. I’m sure the next board will also look forward to a good and continued constructive working relationship that would promote social and cultural cooperation on campus in the academic community and student life as a whole.
