Sociology is the science on human co-existence, from individuals in groups to social changes on national and global level. The sociologists try to understand different societies and the particularity of groups and how social relations are dependent upon as well as influence economic, technological and cultural relations.
Learning how the Norwegian and other societies are structured and how they function, and how such social units can be analysed and examined is an important part of studying sociology. Development of a critical and constructive understanding of the society and ability to see similarities and differences between sociological perspectives and approaches of other disciplines are also a part of the study.
Students will learn how sociologists work to develope knowledge on social relations and institutions. Education in sociology gives the students a broad academic competence within the social sciences.
