Branches of study in General Archaeology and Protection of Cultural Monuments.
The Archaeologist studies pre-historic and historic societies with starting point in the material traces these societies have left. The discipline has a long-term perspective, from the beginning of mankind’s existence and up to recent periods.
The Archaeologist’s sources are findings and antiquities in the present landscape. The findings are documented through field registrations and excavations, which require skills in field techniques. The discipline has therefore also a practical aspect.
Archaeology is inter disciplinary and makes use of knowledge from many different areas within the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
Perspectives from social anthropology, history and philosophy found basis for archaeological problem formulations and natural sciences as geology, botany, and zoology contribute in analyses of archaeological material.
Institute of Archaeology offers students a bachelor’s degree with basis in archaeological methodology and theory, with focus on Scandinavian archaeology. Courses on protection of cultural monuments, museum-related knowledge and a field course are also included in the degree. It is possible to study one semester abroad.
