Study branches in general religious studies and theology.
Religion has always been and is an important and necessary part of societies and cultures. Knowledge on religions is therefore important for inter-cultural communication. Religious studies give the students a thorough introduction in religious traditions in past and present, locally and globally, and compare different religions. New branches on the religious tree and meetings between religions are also given attention.
The study gives the students the necessary academic tools to understand religions in their cultural and social context. This includes, in addition to general knowledge on the different religions, knowledge on the theoretical and methodological approaches of the discipline. The University of Tromsø has a special responsibility for studies of Sámi, North-Norwegian and arctic religious relations. Religious anthropological approaches and minority perspectives are in particular given importance.
A bachelor’s degree in religious studies gives qualifications to apply for admission to a master’s program in religious studies. With certain academic combinations and with basis in religious studies it is on master’s degree level also possible to get a priest/clergyman education.
