PhD Course, August 13 - 14 2007:

Abduction as research strategy

While induction and deduction are well established as research strategies, abduction is less developed. As a strategy for doing empirical research, abduction is applied by some and looked upon with interest by others who see new possibilities in it a method that may overcome shortcomings in traditional approaches to social inquiry.

The aim of the conference is to:

  • present the theoretical and philosophical background of abduction;
  • distinguish abduction from induction, deduction and retroduction; and
  • give practical training in using abduction as a research strategy

  • This will be achieved through discussions of exemplary scientific works (mainly doctoral dissertations) that use abduction as a research strategy, lectures and presentations, and discussion of papers from the participants.
