Title:
Looking for Culture in the Forest:
Reflections on Evenki Cultural Revival Movements in Transbaikalia
Based on field materials from Zabaikale, in Eastern Siberia, this lecture will present a case study of a family reindeer-herding brigade attempting to revive autochtonous reindeer herding in post-Soviet conditions. One of the 'techniques' they employ is revitalised shamanic ritual for both pragmatic and ideological reasons. The lecture will critically examine the problems that anthropologists and native intelligentsia have with questions of authenticity.
