Working fields
Pyrenomycetes (Ascomycetes), mainly taxonomy, ecology and distribution of pyrenomycetes in northern regions.
Mycology in general; fungal forays and courses in edible fungi for the public. Cryptogamic herbarium, TROM.
Present research projects
* Pyrenomycetes s. lat. (Ascomycota) on Salix in a geographic transect across Central North Scandinavia: responses to phorophyte species and climatic gradients. In cooperation with Rune H. Økland (Oslo).
* The genus Daldinia (Ascomycota) in Norway. In cooperation with Alfred Granmo (Tromsø).
* The Lophiostoma compressum – complex in Fennoscandia. In cooperation with Alfred Granmo (Tromsø), John Beck Jensen (Tromsø) and Øyvind Stensrud (Oslo).
* Northern Ascomycota: Taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny of selected pyrenomycetes.
An application for a Researcher position and a Doctoral fellowship was submitted to the Norwegian Research Council 2004, but the application was rejected. However, in 2005 the University of Tromsø granted a University research fellowship (4 years) in mycology to our department. Therefore, in the application to the Norwegian Research Council in June 2005, we only applied for a Researcher position for dr. Alfred Granmo.
Cooperating scientists are Alfred Granmo (Tromsø), Ove Eriksson (Umeå), Larrissa Vasilyeva (Vladivostok), Øyvind Stensrud (Oslo) and John Beck Jensen (Tromsø).
The Northern Ascomycota is divided into the following subprojects:
- The Lophiostomataceae s. lato: Taxonomic revision and phylogenetic analysis.
- The Xylariaceae: Taxonomic revision of the genus Entoleuca, and its connection to allied genera in the family.
Laboratory of Molecular Taxonomy
Our DNA laboratory was in full operation from the fall of 2003, and is run by dr. scient. John Beck Jensen. The laboratory is well equipped with modern instruments to be used in molecular taxonomy studies. Major efforts have been made to establish a DNA laboratory at the Botanical Department of Tromsø Museum, serving all branches of biology, and the establishment of our laboratory was made possible by economic support from the Norwegian Research Council.
