Up until now, the subject librarians have been free to buy new journals whenever a reasonable request has been made from staff or students. From 2008, this is no longer possible. We can still buy new journals or databases, but the subscription will not start until the following year. And - for every new subscription we make, we also have to cancel one of our existing subscriptions (holding a similar price).
This increased control over our journals budget has been made due to several reasons, one of them being the rise in journal prices the last few years, which has led to more and more resources being bound up in subscriptions, and less money for buying books. Buy doing this we hope to secure our book budgets. So, we hope this is for the best for you as a library user. If you have a journal subscription request, please send it to me before June, to make sure it can be available from 2009.
