SVF-3101: Film Form: Representing reality through the camera
10 Study points

Required level: Bachelor in Social Sciences
Course and examination term: Autumn
Course co-ordinator: Bjørn Arntsen
Lecturers: Bjørn Arntsen
Marit Gjertsen

Objectives:
This unit form a compulsory part of the Master's in Visual Cultural Studies.

Course description:
This unit will focus on film form and cinema language with an emphasis on the shooting practice: looking at and representing reality through the camera.
The course is both theoretical and practical, aiming to prepare the students - both in their way of thinking and operating - as filmmakers capable of using the camera in their fieldworks as a tool of observation and representation of the chosen reality.

Throughout the course the students will receive technical training and feedback in the use of the equipment (both Camera and Sound). They will conduct a range of exercises, from still photography to video recording aimed to confront them with a growing range of complexities in elaborating a filmic discourse and to develop their skills - both technically and expressively - in the art of telling stories with images. Analyses and interpretation of the "rushes" will be an ongoing part of this learning process also focused on the acquisition of an awareness of how different ways of filming imply different ways of looking at and representing reality, different ways of producing knowledge.

The theoretical lectures on cinema language and on different approaches to filming reality and their implicationswill include looking at a selection of film excerpts from early cinema to the most recent trends.

In the 'Film seminar', films from early cinema to the most recent trends will be screened in their full length. The seminar gives an introduction to different genres within ethnographic- and documentary filmmakingand offers a forum for discussion that demands active participation from the students.

This course is a part of the preparations for the two-week fieldwork conducted in Tromsø, during the autumn term.

Course structure and duration:
The course will run for 7 weeks (excluding the fieldwork).
During fieldwork there will be seminars twice a week where the students will present their work-in-progress.
Course attendance is mandatory.
