Organochlorine contaminants in biota and sediment from lakes on Bear Island

Volum764/99
SerietittelStatlig program for forurensningsovervåking. Rapport
BeskrivelseInvestigation of OCs in sediments and biota from two different lakes on Bear Island (74oN) indicate that these contaminants have been transported there from remote sources by atmospheric processes. In one of the lakes, Ellasjøen, OC concentrations werw very high. It is suggested that additional input of bird guano is the main source for this increased contamination level, although other processes, such as local high precipitation may give additional contributions. Further, there is clear evidence of bioaccumulation, especially in the higher levels of he food web. Effect studies show a clear relation between cytochrome P450 activity and general levels of PCBs in Arctic char.
