The Program for Molecular Ecology and Biosystematics (MEB)
works for a creative and successful synthesis of classic
and modern methods in solving questions in plant and fungal
taxonomy, biogeography, phylogeny, evolution and molecular
ecology. Members of the MEB group are engaged in three major
biomes, the boreal forests, the arctic and alpine regions,
and the tropics. Our research requires an exiting combination
of outdoor field work with subsequent laboratory and
computerized analyses. We employ various methods, including
cultivation, light- and electron microscopy, molecular
techniques and computer analyses.
Our major goals are to (1) explore the evolutionary
diversification within selected plant and fungal groups and
study important evolutionary mechanisms involved, (2) develop
and employ rapid and accurate molecular methods for identifying
species of fungi in their natural habitats or in culture, and
(3) map and characterize biodiversity and genetic variability
in plants and fungi. |
