There is in Norway today a great demand for advanced research and competence in the fields of multiphase chemical/metallurgical reactor- and process technology, and in high-pressure gas separation. This has been prompted by the demand for better utilisation of mineral resources and energy, leading to improvements on the environmental side, coupled with steadily more demanding operating environments such as sub sea completion and separation systems

To confront these challenges, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, and the Society for Industrial and Technological Research, SINTEF, in collaboration with the University of Bergen, UiB, have started two doctoral programmes supported by the Norwegian Research Council and Norwegian and foreign industry. The programmes also include Post-doc positions.

One of the programmes, CARPET, is a combined Strategic University Programme (SUP)/Strategic Institute Programme (SIP) at NTNU/SINTEF. This programme focuses on experimental studies and modelling of multiphase flows in chemical and metallurgical reactors and of other multiphase processes. The other, HiPGaS, is an industrially oriented competence building programme. The main focus is to improve the understanding of the physical and chemical processes involved in high-pressure gas/liquid separations.

Common for both are the understanding and modelling of multiphase flows in a variety of geometries and the fundamental mechanisms of droplet and bubble break-up, entrainment, deposition, and coalescence.

You can read more about the individual CARPET projects by browsing the "Projects" menu on your left, or by following the links below: A sixth PhD project on the topic of mixing will be started if CARPET is able to get further financial backing. A more detailed description of each of these projects can be found using the menu to your left for browsing.
