| CO2 capture |
In view of the problems associated with global warming, the Kyoto Protocol, and the focus on CO2 as a greenhouse gas, the Reactor Technology group has during the many years been active in development and improvement of absorption processes for CO2 removal from both exhaust and natural gas. With the expected increase in power production, the removal of CO2 from power plants based on the combustion of both natural gas and coal will become of great importance on a world basis. The situation is particularly complex in the Norwegian scenario where the establishment of any gas-fired power plant will lead to an increase in the inland CO2 emissions unless recovered and safely deposited.
The research can be split into several topics:
Process operation integration and optimisation
Process development and improvement
Membrane contactors
New absorbents
Measurement and modelling of equilibrium, kinetics and transport properties
The research in this field heavily relies on experimental work as indicated by our facilities. For modelling, the same concepts as for multiphase reactors are used, with extended on multi-component diffusion and ionic transport. Also in this work we have close collaboration with the SINTEF Process Technology group.
The work on process integration is done within the NTNU Natural Gas Systems Group, where we are a member. Part of our activity is through the NTNU strategic area Energy and the Environment , which is funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
At present we collaborate with SINTEF, IFP and TNO for submission of a joint Integrated Project (IP) proposal (CASTOR) for European Union Framework Programme 6 (FP6).
