Shared Content

The project Shared Content supports philosophical work on issues related to the nature of linguistic context sensitivity. We interpret 'related to' liberally.

Examples of the kinds of topics explored include (but are not limited to):

  1. Questions about whether specific expressions (e.g. 'know', 'if', 'good', 'or', 'some', 'reindeer', and 'might') are semantically context sensitive.
  2. How, in general, one should distinguish between semantic and pragmatic context sensitivity.
  3. Whether some sentences express propositions that contain unarticulated constituents.
  4. How to provide evidence of indexicals that are not articulated in the surface syntax of sentences.
  5. Whether in uttering a sentence a speaker asserts more than one proposition.
  6. The nature of assertions
  7. The relationship between semantic context sensitivity and relativism about truth.

The project includes one post doctoral fellow (Owen Greenhal) and one PhD student (Torfinn Huvenes).

The project is lead by Professor Herman Cappelen. For the period 2006-2009 it is financed by the Norwegian Research Council.
