Academic Writing 2005

A brief presentation of the conference
We have the great pleasure of inviting you to a doctoral course in academic writing. The course  will consist of three seminars, the first one taking place 6-8th June 2005 at Sulitjelma near Bodö city. The second gathering is planned to be held  in September 2005, and the third gathering is to be arranged in spring 2006. These locations are not yet set.

The objective of the course

The participators should, during the course seminars, prepare a scientific paper with a quality high enough to be considered for submission to an international “blind reviewed” journal.

Participators

The course is offered on a PHD-level. It aims at students who already have collected  some empirical data and students who are in the process of gathering data. The participators may have different professional backgrounds; have different disciplinary approaches and different research methodologies. The course will address each student’s work on research methodology, research design, data gathering etc. Individual supervision  will be given.

The participation in the course is based on the development of a draft of paper to be published in a scientific journal. During the course, the research problem, the theoretical framework, empirical material, discussion and conclusion will be discussed.

The number of participators should be no more than 15. Informal discussions and a continuous ongoing evaluation of the participators contributions will be promoted. The course – leader is responsible for the practical arrangement.

The social setting of the course

The course in June 2005 is planned to be arranged at Sulitjelma Hotel. Here we can experience a wild and magnificent nature with mountains and an old mining district.

The locations for the next seminars will  also be in the Bodö area such as Saltstraumen, Landego and Saltstraumen.  These sites are well suited for learning experiences. However, there is a possibility that the last seminar can be arranged in St.Petersburg as Bodö Graduate School of Business has close cooperation with universities in this area.

Faculty

Main faculty will be Professor Sten Jönsson, Gothenburg Research Institute and Bodø Graduate School of Business and Professor Inger Johanne Pettersen, Bodø Graduate School of Business.

Professor Sten Jönsson is the former editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Management and member of several editorial boards of journals within the field. Professor Jönsson has participated in the Nordic networks since the early beginning (Nordisk Företaksekonomisk Förening and the Nordiska Företaksekonomiska Ämneskonferensene). Both professor Jönsson and professor Pettersen have been involved in many educational programs at graduate and doctoral levels. Professor Inger Johanne Pettersen is a member in several programme committees of the Norwegian Council of Research and a reviewer of papers submitted to several blind-reviewed journals in the field.

The next theme of the course is the review process itself. Each participator should study and comment on a manuscript which is submitted for evaluation in a journal (ex: Scandinavian Journal of Management).

The main part of the course focuses on the participators’ own development of the paper through the writing-processes. This writing process will be organized by 2-3 revisions during the course period. This includes plenary presentations and discussions in the group of participators. The participators are expected to comment on each paper.

The course is organised as plenary lectures, individual presentations and comments on written work.
