DR415E Managing Institutional and Organizational Change
5-7. April and 22. May 2006
10 ECTS Credits
This course will introduce participants to current streams of literature on institutional and organizational change. The aim is to explore the fundamental questions raised in these lines of research, to assess the utility of various approaches in answering different kinds of research questions and to find ways in which these research traditions can be combined and thus cross-fertilize each other.
Students will be asked to prepare the seminar by writing a 10 page reflective summary of this literature with special focus on how the various streams of research can be understood in relation to each other and how they can be combined. Moreover, in this summary students are asked to reflect upon how these streams of literature can inform their own doctoral research projects.
The seminar on April 5 – 7 will be dedicated to presentations and discussions of the assigned literature. The literature, and the discussion during the seminar around this literature, is divided into four parts: (1) theories on institutional change (2) theories on organizational change (3) theories on technological change (4) managing change.
The fourth theme seeks to combine insights from the three streams of research. We emphasize that institutional and organizational change are interdependent and reciprocal. Organizational change follows on, but also contributes to and seeks to influence institutional and technological change. In order to further our understanding of this interdependence, we explore how management can be developed in ecologies of changes. Furthermore, change and management of change should be perceived in processual terms with incremental and unintended lines of development.
During the seminar, time will be dedicated to discussion of the participants’ on-going research projects, in an attempt to identify and highlight dynamic aspects and issues related to managing institutional and organizational change. After the seminar, students will be asked to revise and develop their course-papers, with a clear focus on assessing how various streams of research can be combined in order to answer different kinds of research questions. These papers will be discussed during a follow up seminar on 22. May. Both seminars are built upon the active participation of students. Deadline for submitting the final paper is 1 August 2006.
This course should be of relevance for students in business studies, management, political science, sociology and neighbouring fields with a research interest in organizational and institutional change.
