The CMS 386N class at the Univeristy of Texas at Austin for the spring of 2007 will be taught in a special format. It will include graduate students from Europe (primarily Scandinavian countries) with an equal number of US students. The first half of the course will be taught in a single six-day period from Sunday evening, January seventh through Friday evening, January the twelfth. The class will meet at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas Texas (http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/). One half-day period of this week will be a tour on the MSI craft “Katy” (http://www.utmsi.utexas.edu/institute/longhorn/katy.htm) to observe field research in marine sciences. The costs for room and food for these six days is approximately $35 per day with barracks-like sleeping facilities and excellent food. Ethnographic films will be shown some evenings and used as a stimulus for writing field notes and examining likeness and differences between researchers’ views.
Special features also include a reading plan that students will complete prior to arriving in Port Aransas. European professors will also make presentations as part of the program. In addition to an intense focus on observational and interviewing methods during this week, there will be a series of presentations by recent Masters and Doctoral holders who used qualitative research as their primary data collection method. The purpose of these presentations will be to expose graduate students to work similar to their own anticipated dissertation research.
Enrollment in this special course is by instructor permission only and is limited to twelve US students and twelve European students. Students will be admitted based on their project plans and appropriateness for the course. For this three hour University of Texas course, US students will conduct field research on a major project in the spring of 2007 following this weeklong workshop and meet in the latter half of the spring of 2007 to complete the class meeting requirements and to present the results of their field research. European students, will receive credit from Bodø Graduate School of Business and must turn in a research proposal or a paper prior to the course, present this during the week, and then turn in a final revised paper by the end of spring term. For European students, the course count as 10 ECTS credits upon completion of the final paper.
