The IMPACTS partners have complementing expertise beyond what any partner alone can offer. These partners offer you an international masters degree in Advanced Computing Technologies and Systems.
The students will be enrolled at their home institutions. The home institution will have the administrative responsibility for their students for the duration of the studies.
The IMPACTS Degree Programme (120 ECTS)
The partners in the program are:
<< Language
The core modules constituting the 1st semester work will be taught in the local language or English. Course material will be based on English textbooks and material. The teaching in the remaining semesters will be conducted in English.
More about: International Masters Programme in Advanced Computing Technologies and Systems. The development of the information society has had a major effect on all industries. To stay competitive, ICT-companies mediating such effects have to invest in human talent, and to identify development methodologies, tools and techniques that are capable of efficiently exploiting the ever advancing computing systems technology. Both the pace of change in this technology and the complexity of the problems to be solved, are increasing. Computing systems technology will be a key building block in nearly all intelligent products. This is a constantly evolving product class calling on technology from other classes, e.g. software, microprocessors, memory, analog and mixed signal systems.
The aim of this degree program is to offer a holistic education answering to the future needs of academia and industry by engaging academic expertise from several European countries and to:
- Offer the students an opportunity to study and work in different cultural / professional settings, with all the accompanying benefits: cultural diversity, variety of work procedures, language skills, employment opportunities, etc.
- Create a high quality masters degree incorporating specialist material representing cutting edge reasearch from the partners institutions by putting together a cohesive degree program offering a far greater range of specialist material than could be offered by any induvidual institution.
- To contribute to the successful adoption of the Bologna model for higher education.
- To reinforce the partnership and cooperation links already in place among the participating institutions, which as has already been said share common R&D and pedagogic interests.
- To facilitate the modernisation of curricula both at graduate and under-graduate levels, through the exchange of experiences, curricula, academic staff and students.
- Establish and foster better links between academia and industry.
The studies can be financed through Statens Lånekasse.
<< Progression of Studies
An outline of the student progression in the master programme will be:
Semester 1
- Will provide a set of common core modules, to be taken at the student’s homeinstitution. Topics in the core material will include Project Management, Research Methods and Project Planning, System Modelling using UML, Hardware Development methodes and test.
Semester 2
The student must choose between the following:
University of Abertay Dundee:
- Smart systems
- Wireless and Mobile Systems
- Artificial Intelligence
- Human Computer Interactions
University of Porto:
- Signal Processing Architectures and Applications
- Reconfigurable Computing Systems
- Dynamic Reconfiguration and Resource Management
- Dependability and fault Tolerance
Semester 3
Høgskolen i Buskerud:
- Real Time Systems
- Real Time Programming
- Software/Hardware development
- Implementation Technology
During semester 4
the students will undertake their Master project (i.e. thesis work) primarily at their home institution with the possible expert support from one or more of the other consortium members.
The work for each semester, successfully completed to the appropriate level, corresponds to 30 ECTS credits.
- On obtaining 30 ECTS credits the student will be eligible to graduate with an IMPACTS Certificate.
- On obtaining 60 ECTS credits the student will be eligible to graduate with an International Post-Graduate Certificate.
- On obtaining 90 ECTS credits the student will be eligible to graduate with an International Post-Graduate Diploma.
- On obtaining 120 ECTS credits the student will be eligible to graduate with the International Masters Degree.
Progression within the course
- Students must pass the first core modules, at the appropriate level, in order to progress to the 2nd and 3rd semester subjects.
- To progress from the taught component of the course to the Masters project, the student must have passed all taught modules in semesters 1 to 3, at the appropriate level. The IMPACTS coordinating board will review the progression of individual students at end of semester 3.
- A Final Exam Board will be held at an appropriate point after the completion of semester 4, to consider all student results and ratify graduation outcomes. An independent external examiner will be appointed for the International Masters Programme and must be present at the Final Exam Board to ratify results.
The programme aims to meet the European standards defined by the Bologna agreement, in terms of the articulation of undergraduate and post-graduate qualification, the definition of post-graduate standards, and the application of credits under the ECTS system.
<< Study methods
The main stydy method will be lectures, tutorials and laboratory work and make use of the modern learning models, offering a constructivist student-centered approach to learning material development and delivery and to providing a technological infrastructure to support these materials. This offers an innovative model for the support of post-graduate education, distributed across a number of collaborating higher-education institutions within Europe.
The use of distant learning methodologie
Information and communication technologies, developed to support distance learning methods and tools, are of fundamental importance in the context of the IMPACTS coursework. More specifically, frameworks for web delivery of pedagogical contents (including student assessment) and for supporting cross-institutional synchronous communication facilities, will be put in place, and will be thoroughly used in all activities that will be carried out. The intentions are to make use of a web-based student information systems informing and connecting students across the various learning sites.
<< Student and society benefits
There are a number of benefits that will encourage students to enrol for the joint masters programme:
- The core module material to be studied at home institution is developed jointly by all partners. This contribute significantly towards ensuring an improved quality of the overall masters degree.
- The topics in the advanced modules will build on the core modules and reflect the offering institutions thereby reinforcing the quality and European dimension of higher education teaching by combining the expertise and state-of-the -art knowledge of universities from several countries.
- A distributed joint degree program promote intercultural dialogue and understanding and enables student to be better prepared to enter a European marketplace.
- Particular importance is attached to curricula development activities which involve enterprises and contribute to enhancing the employability of graduates.
In order to achieve sound development in the future information society technologies we need to bring together software, hardware and domain experts and to make sure that they have common understanding, and the ability to communicate across the various expert boundaries.
To support their mobility — a period of study in the host country — students may be entitled to an Erasmus grant in addition to the grants which they normally receive from other sources such as their region, state, or university. This European grant is intended to help to cover the cost of travelling and the difference in cost of living.
It should also be noted that the European Commission may fund part of students' language tuition prior to their departure to a foreign establishment.
<< Entrance Qualifications
In order to qualify for entrance into the IMPACTS master programme the students must have one of the following qualifications:
- A good BSc degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a minimum duration of three years.
- A different BSc degree deemed equivalent by the IMPACTS Coordinating Board.
- Other documented qualifications deemed sufficient by the IMPACTS Coordinating Board.
- Entry into later semesters in the course will be granted by the IMPACTS coordinating board on the basis of exit qualifications either from IMPACTS courses or courses deemed equivalent by that board.
