Research Strategy

Research strategy for the Faculty of Health Studies

Finnmark University College

2007 - 2010

This plan was passed by the board of the faculty 18 October, 2006.

Background

The Faculty of Health Finnmark University College will offer higher education and conduct research and developmental work at a high level. The research and developmental work will be based on the understanding of regional problems, and the teaching will be research based.  The faculty has a particular responsibility to meet the challenges of competence within the health service of Finnmark and nearby areas.

The available plan takes as its starting point a division between two fundamental activities at the faculty; research and developmental work, and focuses on the research part, although they will be overlapping in certain cases.

The profile of the faculty is ‘health related challenges in the northern areas’ with starting point in the studies that are administrated by the department; Bachelor in nursing and the interdisciplinary further educations. The faculty wishes to gather research powers around selected topics under this umbrella so that colleagues may contribute towards the same problems over time.  The targets are high quality research and publications, and for the faculty to be able to make up a centre of competence within the selected areas. A joint effort around fewer topics will help the department avoid fragmented and vulnerable projects. The department is at the same time included in a joint national development of knowledge and will see the research activities as an integrated part of this.

The selected topics have been picked out on several grounds: i) the strategy plan of the University College for 2005-2007; ii) the activity plan for the Faculty of Health studies for 2006-2009; iii) relevance for the faculty’s teaching and subject area; iv) challenges that Finnmark University College, the faculty and the students particularly relate to (industrial development and scattered settlement); v) Competence, experiences and interests that are available at the faculty.

Topics of priority

Under the profile ‘health related challenges in the northern areas’ the faculty will prioritize the following line of nursing and health topics during the 2007-2010 period:

1. Multicultural relations and health

Examples:

-          Health services and preventive measures in multicultural local societies (such as Hammerfest which is represented by many nationalities)

-          Health concepts and notions of health across ethnic groups

-          Health related project co-operations across boarders in the northern areas.

2. Information technology in health training and clinic

Examples:

-          Virtual training rooms and simulations

-          Telemedicine

-          Online procedure book on clinic

3. Living conditions and health in the northern areas

Examples:

-                     Clinical subjects understood in light of conditions in the northern areas (such as living with chronic pains, suicide prevention, birth and post-natal period)

The faculty also sees the opportunity to support topics and applications outside these areas.

Means

The means to strengthen the research and performance of the department are:

-          Prioritize Research and Education applications within the prioritized areas

-          Divert Ph.D scholarships financed by Finnmark University College towards the prioritized topics.

-          Urge employees to angle any prospective Master theses in the direction of the prioritized topics.

-          Lead parts of the students to write their Bachelor theses within the prioritized topics

-          Implement publishing co-operations between colleagues at the faculty and other institutions.

-          During 2007, establish an international research project that will run for several years, where several employees participate.

-          Award those who deliver their final product in research work (scientific articles, book chapters, reports etc.), through, for instance, improving their chances of having economic incentives, new projects and Research and Education time granted.

-          Internationalization: Select 2 institutions in Russia and 1 in Finland with the purpose of developing particularly close research co-operations, including researcher mobility.

Organization

The Faculty of Health will establish a research committee that will assist the dean in following up the strategic plan, maintain the survey over Research and Education possibilities, give advice relating to Research and Education applications  and push for associate professor qualifications. The faculty will also initiate cooperation with the research department of Finnmark Regional Health Authority, with the idea in mind to establish regular meetings to discuss research.

Revision of the plan

The plan will be evaluated after 2 years, and adjusted if important possibilities and settings are changed.
