Kursets mål og innhold

Course aims

We know that many people at HiO find themselves using English as part of their jobs, and we know that your aims and needs vary quite a lot. Some of you may need English to meet people and talk to them socially or in formal meetings. Some of you may be planning to do some teaching in English, or to present a paper at a conference. Some may want help with writing English. We think all of you will find it useful to find out how to describe your professional areas in English. You may feel you need help to break some barriers to give yourself the confidence to use English. And we are pretty sure you will find that you can communicate in English more easily than you might think!

Course components

  • 10 Thursday meetings, starting on February 24 and then in weeks 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, from 14.00 to 17.00. Here we aim to create a relaxed situation around using spoken English. What about - Among other things: your work and the work of the college - professional language - social language - cultural similarities and differences.
  • A course home page, with course information and messages, work assignments and links to relevant material. The home page will be linked to our own room in Class Fronter which we shall use for various forms of interaction in English.
  • Course tasks. You will be expected to spend 2 - 3 hours between meetings working on reading, preparation and writing.
  • Individual help with writing a number of texts of various types, using ClassFronter to give you feedback.
  • A one-day "international conference" on Thursday May 12 where you will all join in to make presentations and do all the other conference jobs - in English
  • A study visit to York in week 21 with an intensive programme and excursions to places of interest.
  • Finally, a summing up and evaluation on June 9.

Course teachers

Anne Evang and Kathryn Hermansen, both teachers of English at the Faculty of Education at OsloUniversityCollege. They have run courses for colleagues here at HiO and also at Akershus University College and are very happy to have the opportunity to run an English course for our colleagues at Oslo University College.

We have prepared a questionnaire for you to fill in about your use of English and your needs, so that we can individualise as much as possible.

We look forward very much to meeting you in February!
