Paper: A Great Equaliser

Høivik, Helge and Cui, Guangzuo: A Great Equalizer: E-learning Patterns in Europe and Asia. Paper for E-Learn 2006 - World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare and Higher Education -, Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawai USA Oct. 13-17, 2006. [ PDF ]

Based on a theoretical perspective of learning as textual reproduction and a survey of faculty members at Peking University and Oslo University College, this paper finds strong correlations in how computer technologies are used to support teaching and learning across cultural and pedagogical differences. This similarity is attributed to a common technological design architecture that affords student collaboration and in-depth institutional cooperation. To benefit from these possibilities teacher training programs should address both operational ability and the more fundamental aspects of the new formats and production-and-exchange logic.
