Health Insurance
National Health Insurance
Students from the Nordic countries, UK and Northern Ireland benefit from a reciprocal agreement with Norway, and do not need social security coverage from their home country. Students from EU and EEA countries must have social security coverage from their home country. You must also remember to bring the European Health Insurance Card form from your local health services.
Other students must contact the Counselling Service at OAS (Student Union for Oslo and Akershus) and fill in a form entitling them to social security coverage if their stay is less than a year. After this, one automatically becomes insured under the National Insurance Scheme “Folketrygden”.
The National Insurance Scheme does not apply to students before they register at school, or after they have completed their studies, or during travel abroad in the course of the semester. For this, private insurance is needed. Furthermore, the National Insurance Scheme does not cover dental care, or illness contracted before coming to Norway.
National Identification Number
If you are staying in Norway for six months or longer, you need to have a Personal Identification Number. This consists of an 11.digit number, comprising your birth date followed by 5 more digits. You apply for your ID-number at the National Population Registry Office.
