Welcome to the HiPGaS homepage
The HiPGaS programme is a joint Competence Program between NTNU, UiB,
three major oil companies and three vendors supplying separation equipment.
The program was started in 2001 and will run for a period of 5 years.
The programme is sponsored by the Norwegian Research Council
( NFR) and the participating
industrial partners.
HiPGaS is an acronym for:
High
Pressure
Gas
Separation.
The program duration is from 2001 through 2005.
The total budget is 18,7 MNOK.
The HiPGaS program comprises a total of 5 PhD projects and one
postdoc / research scientist position.
A more detailed description of HiPGaS program can be obtained by using the
menu to your left for navigation.
Introduction
The development of oil and gas fields both on the Norwegian continental shelf and
in other places of the world, moves towards smaller and more remote fields where more
cost effective solutions must be found. The vision is to do all offshore gas/liquid and
liquid/liquid separation sub-sea, i.e. a total high pressure separation concept.
Arguments for such a shift are to avoid expensive topside facilities, to facilitate the
separation processes themselves, to lower the amounts of water and gas to be transported
and/or discharged, and to reclaim gas at a high pressure, making recompression before
pipeline transport unnecessary.
The aim of the proposed programme is to provide the basis for the high pressure
gas/liquid separation part of a total sub-sea separation concept.
The HiPGaS programme is supported by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR), and by
three oil companies and three vendors of separation equipment. These are:
- Statoil
- Norsk Hydro
- Phillips
- Kvaerner Process Systems, KPS
- FMC Kongsberg Subsea
- Asea Brown Boveri, ABB
The supported program is for 5 years, but we foresee that this is the start of a
long-term engagement that will continuously provide know-how and expertise to develop
sub-sea solutions steadily further.
The main challenges within gas separation may be summarised by the situation
today and tomorrow's challenges.
Situation today:
- Entrainment of liquid droplets in gas processing equipment, leading to :
- Breakdown of compressors
- Operational problems for gas treating equipment
- Foaming in gas dryers (TEG absorption)
- Foaming in CO2 removal units (Amine absorption)
- Modification costs and reduced income due to operational problems
- Gas quality
- Hydrocarbon dew-point
- Water dew-point
- Entrainment of chemicals (TEG, Amine)
Tomorrow's challenge:
- Sub-sea separation and processing
- Obtain quality specifications on the products in order to reduce
topside equipment (separation with low entrainment)
- Intervention, inspection and modifications
- Long distance transportation
- Compact equipment
Induced modification costs and losses due to reduced production add up to several
billion NOK.

Project philosophy and objectives
The philosophy behind the project is to create a platform of knowledge, models, and
experimental methodology and
equipment that can form the basis for improved and reliable design of high-pressure
gas/liquid separation equipment,
for the development of new designs, and for improved offshore operations.
Today, the design basis of high-pressure gas/liquid separation equipment is far too
uncertain, as explained in the
introduction by the problems encountered. For sub-sea installations incorrect design
would be detrimental and a
better basis for design is crucial.
The objectives for the work are:
- To create a competence platform in the field of high-pressure gas/liquid
separation that can be used by both
operators and equipment suppliers.
- To develop improved understanding of the physio-chemical processes involved,
and their interactions.
- To develop a laboratory where pertinent tests and analysis can be reliably
performed.
- To develop mathematical models of the physio-chemical processes that can be
used as a basis for design and
development of new equipment and operational procedures.

Dissemination of information
We aim at publishing a minimum of 25-30 papers and contributions in refereed
journals and at national and international conferences.
In addition we will arrange semi-annual seminars where the dr.ing fellows and
researchers will present their work for the industrial partners.
Close collaboration with the NFR-supported SIP/SUP programme CARPET will be
maintained
(see www.carpet.ntnu.no).

Doctoral programme
The project is divided into five main tasks that interact with each other. To each
task is associated one doctoral fellowship. The tasks are:
- HiPGaS 1:
- Experimental
characterization of fluid parameters in real systems
- HiPGaS 2:
- Experimental
characterization of wire mesh demister operated at high pressure
- HiPGaS 3:
- Experimental
characterization of high pressure multiphase flow in relevant geometries
- HiPGaS 4:
- Modelling of dispersed
systems, coalescence and break-up of droplets and liquid films
- HiPGaS 5:
- Fluid dynamic
modelling of high pressure gas/liquid separation, droplet deposition and re-entrainment

Organisation
Who are we?
HiPGaS is a collaboaration between research groups at
NTNU,
UiB and
R & D personell in the participating industrial companies.
NTNU is the Norwegian acronym for the "Norwegian University of Science and
Technology",
and likewise UiB the acronym for the "University of Bergen".
It should be pointed out that SINTEF is a non-profit research organisation.
