Moving files

The preferred method for moving files to and from the cluster is through SSH secure copy (scp), or the secure file transfer protocol (sftp).

scp

On a machine running Linux (or any other UNIX-like operating system), files can be moved using the scp command, as per the following examples:

Copying a single file my_file.txt to a cluster:

scp my_file.txt username@cluster.name:~/

Copying an entire directory my_directory to a cluster:

scp -r my_directory username@cluster.name:~/

Naturally, username should be your user name on the cluster, cluster.name should be the name of the cluster you are copying to/from, and filenames/paths must be appropriate for your own directory tree.

sftp

For those who prefer it, a number of programs (both graphical and text-based) can be used to connect through secure FTP, and are available for free download. Examples include

  • FileZilla ([1]) for Windows
  • Konqueror ([2]) for Linux

Configuration details for these are too program-specific to cover here, but in general, connections should be made to port 22 of the appropriate cluster using SFTP over SSH2.
