Visualization and Manipulation of Linguistic Data Structures
Computational Linguistics makes heavy use of specialized data structures, including labeled trees and graphs, typed attribute-value matrices, and large concept hierarchies. Grammar Engineering is the process of coding linguistic knowledge in a formal language, and development tools like the Linguistic Knowledge Builder (LKB) and Platform for Experimentation with Linguistic Processing Techniques (PET) provide a graphical user interface that allows the inspection of linguistic objects and (intermediate) processing results. But current systems still lack a flexible and portable graphical interface that would maximize development efficiency and problem analysis in grammar engineering.
The goal of this project is to design customizable browsers for common data structures, on the basis of a high-level widget library (e.g. GTK+, Qt, or wxWidgets). The resulting GUI would aim to synthesize strong features of existing (partial) solutions in a portable, UniCode-enabled, and re-usable tool; furthermore, it will extend existing functionality (based on feedback from grammar engineers) and define a generic interface that allows connecting the same GUI to multiple existing grammar engineering platforms. The project assumes familiarity with basic elements of GUI development (widgets, event-driven user interaction) but does not require in-depth knowledge of computational grammars or linguistics. The closely related Linguistic User Interface (LUI) project may serve as a starting point for design and implementation, but LUI (regrettably) is no longer actively developed and is limited in portability.
