1. Key figures

The information you need to set up your connection is as follows:

kode #1

	Student:                         		 Employee:
	Phone number:   73 59 09 50                      73 59 09 50
	Nameserver:     129.241.0.200 and 129.241.0.201  129.241.0.200 and 129.241.0.201
	Mailserver:     imap.stud.ntnu.no                 Depending on department
	Newsserver:     news.ntnu.no                     news.ntnu.no
 	Domain:         stud.ntnu.no                     depending on department

2. Adding connection

Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections Then under "Pick a Control Panel icon" you choose "Network Connections". After this you go to file -> new connection

Start-picture for modem connection

Then you select: "connect to the internet", and then "next". After this: "Connect using a dial-up modem" and then "next" again.

Once this is done you will be asked what you would like to name your connection. Here you may enter whatever you like, but we are going to go with "NTNU Dialup". Click on "next".

When prompted for phone number, enter 73 59 09 50. Then you click on "next" yet again.

You'll have to decide if you would like everyone else to be able to use your connection. This means that if you choose to let everyone use your connectionm it will be added to all user accounts on your machine. If you would like to be the only one able to use this connection, you choose "My use only". If you only have one user on your machine, it doesn't matter what you select. Here we decide to go with "My use only".

After this you enter your username and password that you use at NTNU. If you don't know your username and/or password, you may contact Orakeltjenesten (orakel@ntnu.no, 73 59 15 00), if you are a student, or your local IT-department, if you are an employee. The same goes if you get a message saying that your username/password could not be verified.

"Make this the default internet connection" means that this is the connection that will be used unless specified otherwise. Here we choose yes (check the appropiate box). "Turn on the Internet Connection Firewall" activates a firewall that makes it more difficult for hackers to enter your machine. Then choose "next".

Choose "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop", then click on Finish. You are noe finished with the connection itself.

For this to work properly, you need to right-click on the new NTNU-connection in network connections. Choose properties and then the tab "Security". Make sure that "Show terminal window" at the bottom of the window is checked.

3. Connecting

Doubleclick the icon on your desktop, enter your username and password,if it's not already entered. Click on "Dial". After a little while, a terminal window appears.

Picture of the terminal window

Here you need to enter your username and password, when the prompt sign appears, for instance "borg>". When you have done this, you enter the command ppp and push "enter". Then you click on "Done".

4. How to make an automated log-in

Now we are going to add a script that takes care of the dial-up process automatically. This means that the black terminal window will not appear.
Right-click on the icon for "NTNU-Dialup" and choose "Properties"

Here you can see that you should choose properties

Choose the tab "Security", remove the check for "Show terminal window", and check the box for "Run script". Download this script: Login-script, and save it as C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\RAS\login.scp where C:\WINNT will depend on where you have installed Windows. You may also choose "Edit", remove what's in the window and enter the following:

kode #2
;
; This script starts a PPP-connection to the Internett.
;
; The script can be used by Windows 95/98, ME, NT 4, 2000 and XP for connecting
; through NTNU's dial up service.
;
; If you experience any problmes, please contact Orakeltjenesten
; at orakel@ntnu.no.

Click on "Browse".

Properties-window

Select the script "login.scp" from the list of scripts, click on "Open" and then "OK". When you double-click on the "NTNU-Dialup" icon now, the log-in process should happen automatically, and you don't have to enter your username and password in the terminal window. You still have to enter your username and password in the first window that appears when you have doubleclicked on the connection, but here you may choose to save the information for future use.

Disconnecting

Here we will go through how you disconnect from the Dial-up service, which might be a good idea to avoid large phone bills.
If you look at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, at you taskbar, you should have an icon that looks like two computer screens.

Tilkoblet ikonet

To disconnect, you right-click this icon, and choose "Disconnect". This icon will now disappear and the modem shuts down the connection.
