This session discusses how design influences work. Design of work tools has a long tradition in the Scandinavian countries, but we also include research about other designed elements of the work place and how that affects work. The session includes presentations from ongoing research.

Working life
session 1
In this session we have invited contributions illuminating theoretical approaches to knowledge advancement in professional networks and empirical examples of converging individual expertise and collective competencies interacting in processes of innovation and learning in the workplace. This includes development of competencies and enabling technologies to deal with authentic problems using examples from teamwork in teacher practice, engineering and health care.

Learning Across Sites
Session 2
The session "Learning Across Sites" focuses on how educational activities and work practices increasingly take place in networks and across multiple and diverse contexts. In each sector and sub sector the development of knowledge is specialized, based on domains and particular divisions of labor. However, such specialization creates challenges for reuse and for knowledge integration. Through the various contributions in this track we aim to contribute to understanding what is unique about the many and diverse learning environments and, potentially, what may emerge as more general features and dimensions in and across such contexts and settings. Specifically, we link this approach to emerging practices in the wake of the increased impact of digital and networked technologies.

Media Convergence, Power and Control
Session 3
This track relates to the convergence of various media technologies and issues and challenges related to how this process may be /controlled/ . Currently, a wide range of control efforts are being implemented. Some are focused on control of the way the Internet id being /used/ . This includes the implementation of "trusted computing" technologies and Digital Right Management Systems (combined with new legislation regarding intellectual property rights), filtering of child pornography and political content (in some countries), etc. Under the label of Internet Governance various measures are discussed and implemented aiming at controlling the /development/ of the Internet. And at the same time new technologies like file sharing networks and mobile technologies are being developed and used and which changes the challenges and needs of control. In this session a roundtable discussion will address how the various control efforts seem to work and how they interact in general, and how technologies developed to control the use of the Internet impacts the developments. The session will also focus on how theories of complexity may help us understand and cope with these control issues.

Exploring Digital Design
Session 4
This session presents the forthcoming book "Exploring Digital Design". The session adresses general questions of design research and design practice from a multidisciplinary perspective with a particular focus on Scandinavian design tradition and its strong roots in participation and use. Digital design is about designing environments with digital components, paying attention to the larger context of history, culture, social relations, collective practices, and new public spaces. People's practices and their lived environments constitute a focus and a context for our approach to digital design. One of the main challenges is to move from developing useful applications to developing platforms for users to configure their own very particular and changing needs, purposes, and articulations.

Authorithy and Literacy
Session 5
This session relates to the transformation in social practices brought about by convergence of offline and online life. Which competencies are nurtured trhrough such practices? Which forms of storytelling and participation are encouraged with digital media? What are the implications for patterns of authority and literacy? How do new forms of digital literacy shape new forms of authority? How is authority based in digital competence and literacy acted out and by whom?

Literacy and media convergence
Session 6
Of special interest for this session is the changing patterns of media use among young people, due to recent developments of the Internet. A key question for exploration will be the interconnection between convergence culture, participation and literacy practices. How to conceptualize literacy as part of such communicative, creative and productive practices using different digital resources will be elaborated and discussed.

Knowledge practices, theoretical and methodological challenges
Session 7
In this session we move across boundaries between learning and work in order to focus on emerging knowledge practices across educational institutions and work environments. However, while Thursday's separate tracks of learning and work identified current themes and issues this combined session presents a series of different cases in order to raise common concerns of methodologies and theoretical framing of emergent knowledge practices.
