CMC Competence

New types of competence develop in a complex and highly differentiated society. In brief, there is an increasing degree of specialisation taking place that demands systems for integrating different types of competencies.

It is possible to distinguish between vertical and horizontal developments in relation to competence, with the vertical indicating specialization and the horizontal focused on integration and breadth. Solving complex problems in society demands both specialization and integration. In health services, the treatment of chronically ill patients may serve as an example, as specialists are needed for diagnosis and treatment while various personnel from different institutions are responsible for following up.

As actors in society, we participate in many different contexts, moving between various arenas in everyday life, institutions and networks involving work and learning processes. A central characteristic of developments in contemporary society is thus the challenge to borders between everyday life and institutional arenas.

Sten Ludvigsen is the Coordinator for CMC Competence.
