Rhetorical Convergence in live performance
Visual digital media in Extended; four multimedia dance performances
Media and Communication Masterstudent , Idunn Sem
“Rhetorical Convergence in live performance” is a practice based master thesis attempting to adapt vocabulary and perspectives from the theoretical field of “New Media” in analysing visual digital media in the multimedia dance production Extended.
- Do the visual digital media in Extended and the live dance material converge rhetorically? And in that case how?
- What are the analytical tools needed to understand this performance and the production process behind it?
- In what way can this thesis utilise web-technology to present the audio visual material, web-references and the diverse theoretical perspectives?
- Multimedia performance
- Multidisciplinary production process
- Practice based learning
- Presentation design of academic texts
Synthetic analytic method.
The Synthetic analytic approach to digital media enables a close and dynamic relation between the way new medias are produced and analysed. The use of experimental and expressive content in this synthetic analytic context provides a freedom to create material that challenges the communicative and analytical tools and processes.
Empirical data (video/photo/printed documents from the production process, video from the performances) will be analyzed using discourse analysis, supplemented by practical experience from the project. Perspectives from “New media”, Scenography, Performance theory and Activity theory will provide the theoretical framework for the analysis.
- Experience and knowledge of analytical approach to new digital expressions,
- The creation of an interesting art piece that expand the experience of a performance and notion of time/space into a virtual one, thereby confronting and explore the role of the audience/user in an interactive installation.
- A worked through example of how to present academic texts using web-technology.
